Conventionally speaking it is understood that continents are "large, continuous and discrete land masses that are, if possible, separated by bodies of water." Many of the seven continents commonly recognized however are not land masses separated by water (in reality only America, Antarctica, and Oceania are actually separated from other continents by water). In this sense, it is noteworthy to mention the enormous area that Asia occupies as opposed to the rest of the continents. Lastly, Antarctica's land area is mostly ice: if we disregarded this fact, its area would be less than 300,000 square kilometers, just like the British Isles.
