A desert is an uninhabited region with arid terrain and hostile climatology in which annual precipitations practically never reach 250 millimeters. There are hot deserts, generally located near the Equator, and cold deserts, which are close to the North and South Poles. Deserts cover most of the earth's land surface; their total area is 50 million square kilometers, approximately one third of Earth's area (16% hot deserts and 14% cold deserts). This ranking lists the world's largest deserts, both hot and cold, according to their area.
