When it comes to delimiting Earth's seas, the International Hydrographic Organization (IHO) is the top international authority. Their publication entitled Limits of Oceans and Seas is the worldwide reference on the matter. The third edition of this work was published in 1953. It does not differentiate between the world's oceans and its seas; it merely lists and numbers them, numbering a total of 66, although sometimes numbers are used with letters, so in reality there are 73. There are a total of 6 oceans (the Atlantic and the Pacific are each divided in two, North and South) and 67 seas. This ranking follows IHO's guidelines and lists the world's largest seas, according to their area.
