The United States of America is comprised of 50 states and a federal district. 49 of these states are in North America and one is the Pacific Ocean. Together, they comprise the world's third most populated nation, after China and India. The population density of a state is the relationship between the number of people that live in it and its surface area. The population density of California, for example, is 8000 times Alaska's population density. This ranking lists U.S. states by their population density, based on data published by the U.S. Census Bureau.
