The American Film Institute (AFI) is an independent, non-profit American cinematographic organization whose objective is to conserve cinematographic material and pay tribute to films. This organization is famous worldwide for two reasons: the lists it publishes on the best movies and the honorary awards it presents to the most outstanding people in the American film industry. In 2001 the American Film Institute published a list on the 100 best American thrillers, selected from a list of 400 nominated films by more than 1,500 members of the film community. The resulting list is reproduced below.
