The United States of America is comprised of 50 states and a federal district. 49 of these states are in North America and one is the Pacific Ocean. Together, they comprise the world's third largest nation by surface area. The largest state is Alaska, which is more than 1000 times larger than some of the smallest states. The smallest state is Rhode Island, and even though it has the smallest territory it has a larger population than other states that have roughly its same area. This ranking lists the states of the United States of America by their surface area.
