It is difficult and controversial to define the radius of a metropolitan area, which explains why there are so many different rankings on the matter. This ranking however includes the world's metropolitan areas by their populations according to the most recent demographic data. By definition, a metropolitan area is an urban region that encompasses a central city (that names the area) and a series of satellite cities (that may function as bedroom communities, industrial cities, commercial and service providing cities... etc). This ranking includes residential areas that surround a larger city and, in some cases, several cities that are close enough to be included in the same area.
